Pune : Neurosurgeons at Manipal Hospital in Baner successfully performed a brain bypass surgery (commonly known as cerebral bypass surgery) on a 32-year-old software engineer from Pune suffering from a rare condition. In this condition, the blood supply to the patient’s brain was significantly reduced, leading to frequent strokes, one of which resulted in vision loss in one eye. Following the surgery, the patient’s health has improved significantly, with partial restoration of vision in the affected eye – a positive and unexpected outcome. Additionally, the frequent strokes have completely stopped.

For six months, the patient had been experiencing episodes of weakness on the left side, usually lasting a few minutes, often triggered by low blood pressure or dehydration. Imaging revealed a complete blockage in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) on the right side. This led doctors to suspect Moyamoya disease, a rare cerebrovascular condition affecting the arteries in the brain, more commonly seen in Asian populations, especially in children and young adults. Due to the instability and severity of the blocked artery, surgery was considered a better option than conventional treatment.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Amit Dhakoji, HOD and Consultant – Neurosurgery at Manipal Hospital, Baner, said:
“This was a highly complex case, so we opted for an STA-MCA bypass. This procedure involves connecting an artery from the scalp to an artery inside the brain to bypass the blockage. As a result, blood flow to the brain was restored. Post-surgery, the patient recovered well. The transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes) ceased completely, and surprisingly, the patient also regained vision in the eye that had lost sight before the operation.”

Mr. Anand Mote, Cluster Director of Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, added:
“At Manipal Hospitals, we strive to provide exceptional medical care even in complex and rare scenarios. This case highlights the importance of teamwork, advanced technology, and deep clinical expertise. We are proud to offer state-of-the-art neurosurgical solutions delivered with precision and compassion.”

The surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Amit Dhakoji, Dr. Shrey Kumar Shah, and their team.
